    Growing Up in Glengarry

Allan J. McDonald, County Archivist, Glengarry County Archives, took the stage at St. Columba Presbyterian in Kirk Hill to share a vivid, heartfelt journey back to life in rural Glengarry during the 1950s and ’60s.

From long days on his family’s 300-acre mixed farm — calving in March, planting and stone picking in spring, haying in June, and threshing in the fall — to one-room schoolhouse days, frugal living, and hearty home cooking, Alan’s memories capture the resilience, authenticity, and deep community spirit that defined the era.

You’ll hear about the slow arrival of modern conveniences like indoor plumbing, TV, and private telephones, the close ties between neighbors, and the lessons learned from a self-sufficient farm upbringing. It’s both a personal memoir and a tribute to the traditions that shaped Glengarry for generations.

Stay tuned for more of Alan’s contributions to the network — sharing Glengarry’s history in his own words.
